Digital transformation (DX) efforts are facing a reckoning. Despite being a priority for a majority of organizations for the last few years, IDC research reveals 47% still feel significantly behind.\u00b9\u00a0Something still isn\u2019t working and organizations are rethinking the way forward.<\/p>\n

Many realize their approach can\u2019t be the launch-and-adopt, siloed efforts that have defined so many transformation attempts so far. It will require a larger vision that considers their entire ecosystem, starting with the foundation. In other words, it will come back to what\u2019s in \u201cthe box.\u201d Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n

The Shift to Human-centric DX (and Its Demands on IT)<\/b><\/h2>\n

As IDC analyst Rick Villars puts it, DX means being digital-first, but it \u201cisn\u2019t a technology. It\u2019s not wireless-first, or SAN-first, or PC-first. It\u2019s an organizational aspiration. And in order to be successful and compete,\u00a0it has to be a characteristic<\/b>\u00a0of a company.\u201d\u00b2<\/p>\n

It\u2019s part and parcel of the argument that transformation is inherently human. Organizations that focus on the human aspect\u2014putting customers\u2019 and employees\u2019 needs first\u2014will outperform others by a longshot.<\/p>\n

The task then becomes translating those aspirations into IT capabilities\u2014not the other way around.\u00a0Why? Because putting the cart before the horse rarely works.\u00a0Transformation is about human experiences and workflows. Modernizing those requires a culture and technology shift. To deliver on it, there needs to be modern applications that are\u00a0data-driven, container-based, and resource-heavy.<\/p>\n

Legacy infrastructures can\u2019t provide the agility, resilience, or scalability to support this shift to human-centric transformation and the modern apps required to deliver on its full potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Box\u201d Is Key to Transformation Success<\/b><\/h2>\n

In order to run the applications which will enable digital transformation to thrive, organizations need to be free of legacy technology which is holding them back. IDC\u2019s Shawn Fitzgerald, research director, Worldwide Digital Transformation (DX) Strategies, notes, \u201cWhile software is certainly important, a much more significant amount of investment dollars from transformation technology budgets will be for\u00a0hardware<\/b>\u00a0and services related to digital transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n
